  54. In the 24th chapter of Unanswered Questions I refer to reports in mainstream news sources in late September that at least eight of the alleged hijackers on Sept. 11 were reported to be alive. What I don’t mention in my book is that in addition to these, according to Paul Thompson’s Complete 9/11 Timeline , “Hani Hanjour’s name is not on the list” of hijackers on September 13, 2001. Then on September 14, “CNN managed to grab a list of the names of the 18 suspected hijackers.” Then CNN added the name “Mosear Caned” to form a total of 19 suspects. Without explanation, the name “Mosear Caned” is removed and replaced with Hani Hanjour later in the day in a report taken from an “FBI press office document listing 19 ‘individuals who have been identified as hijackers aboard the four airliners.’”According to a September 16, 2001, article in the Washington Post, Hanni Hanjour’s name was “not on the American Airlines manifest for [Flight 77] because he may not have had a ticket.” In September 2002, FBI Director Robert Mueller admitted on CNN that there was “no legal proof to prove the identities of the suicidal hijackers.” Questions about flight manifests and passenger lists is a whole other topic which I did not address in my book. However, the matter points at least to the government withholding evidence of key documents for years. The topic is explored in more detail in an article titled “9/11 Misinformation: Flight ‘Passenger Lists’ Show ‘No Hijacker Names’’. Read the article
  55. In 2001 Robert B. Stinnett published Day of Deceit: The Truth About FDR and Pearl Harbor. In a number of endnotes in Unanswered Questions, I point out similar patterns of stonewalling, suppression of evidence, and the decades-long quests of families for an accurate accounting of what happened – experienced by the families of the victims of September 11, 2001, – which were also the experience of families closest to the events of December 7, 1941. Read the book
  56. In mid-September 2001 there were a number of articles indicating Osama bin Laden, instead of taking responsibility for the attacks of Sept. 11, was telling the press that he had no involvement in the attacks. The Irish Times ran a story on September 13, 2001, with the headline “Aide says Bin Laden Denies Role in US Attacks.” While CNN ran a headline on September 17, 2001, that read “Bin Laden says he wasn’t behind attacks,” Read the article
  57. Regarding allegations that Osama bin Laden was responsible for the attacks of Sept. 11, on October 4, 2001, the British Government under Prime Minister Tony Blair released a document from the Prime Minister’s Office. It was titled Responsibility for the Terrorist Atrocities in the United States. In the British document there was certainty that “Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, the terrorist network which he heads, planned and carried out the atrocities on 11 September 2001.” However, buried in the assertion was a note at the start of the document that qualified the claims. The assertion carried a disclaimer noting that the document did “not purport to provide a prosecutable case against Osama Bin Laden in a court of law.” Read the document
  58. The BBC reported on October 5, 2001, “There is no direct evidence in the public domain linking Osama Bin Laden to the 11 September attacks. At best the evidence is circumstantial. The evidence is not being judged in a court of law. It only needs to persuade governments around the world to back the US-led war on terrorism and to a lesser extent to carry public opinion. US and British officials have indicated that they are unable to reveal all the evidence for security reasons.” Read the article
  59. On October 10, 2001, the Guardian interviewed Mohamed Heikal, the former Minister of Information and Foreign Affairs in the Nasser administration in the early 1970’s. In the article titled “There isn’t a target in Afghanistan worth a $1m missile,” Heikal questioned whether Osama bin Laden was solely responsible for the September 11 attacks, arguing that the limited evidence so far presented was not convincing. Heikal, also a journalist for six decades, was identified by the Guardian as “the Arab world’s most respected political commentator.” Heikal told The Guardian there was no proof of bin Laden’s involvement in the attacks on September 11. He said, “Colin Powell was more honest than anybody: he said if not this, it doesn’t matter, he has committed so many other crimes that necessitate taking action against him. But that is like the Chinese proverb: ‘Hit your wife every day; if you don’t know the reason, she does.’” Heikal insisted, “Bin Laden does not have the capabilities for an operation of this magnitude. When I hear Bush talking about al-Qaida as if it was Nazi Germany or the communist party of the Soviet Union, I laugh because I know what is there. Bin Laden has been under surveillance for years: every telephone call was monitored and al-Qaida has been penetrated by American intelligence, Pakistani intelligence, Saudi intelligence, Egyptian intelligence. They could not have kept secret an operation that required such a degree of organization and sophistication.” Though Mohammed Haikal’s analysis was seen as authoritative across the Arab world, and Heikal was familiar with the kind of intelligence different nations had on Osama bin Laden, Heikal’s assessment was not reported in the North American media. 60. After the attacks of Sept. 11, President George W. Bush issued an ultimatum to the Taliban to hand over Osama bin Laden, “close immediately every terrorist training camp, hand over every terrorist and their supporters, and give the United States full access to terrorist training camps for inspection.” On October 7, 2001, the United States launched an invasion of Afghanistan. After a week of bombing the Taliban told Bush, “If the Taliban is given evidence that Osama bin Laden is involved” and the bombing campaign stopped, “we would be ready to hand him over to a third country.” However, Bush told the Taliban the bombing would not stop, unless the ruling Taliban “turn [bin Laden] over, turn his cohorts over, turn any hostages they hold over. There’s no need to discuss innocence or guilt. We know he’s guilty.” The standoff is explored in more detail in a Guardian article from October 14, 2001, titled “Bush Rejects Taliban Offer to Hand Bin Laden Over.” Read the article
  61. A number of news stories were published, beginning in the fall of 2001, questioning the authenticity of videotapes and audiotapes said to be that of Bin Laden. A headline in the Guardian on December 15, 2001, read “US urged to detail origin of tape: As Muslim doubts grow over authenticity, special effects experts say fake would be relatively easy to make.” The Bush administration had claimed a 40-minute videotape discovered in a home in Afghanistan showed Bin laden taking responsibility for the attacks of Sept. 11. But, on further inspection, this was improbable. Read the article and Read this article

  65. In 2003 the CIA’s Office of Technical Services made a fake video for the agency. In an article in the Washington Post titled “CIA Unit’s Wacky Idea: Depict Saddam as Gay,” it was reported the “agency actually did make a video purporting to show Osama bin Laden and his cronies sitting around a campfire swigging bottles of liquor and savoring their conquests with boys, one of the former CIA officers recalled, chuckling at the memory. The actors were drawn from ‘some of us darker-skinned employees,’ he said.” Why was it important for the CIA to be making fake videos of Osama bin Laden? Read the article
  66. On June 4, 2006, the New York Times reported “C.I.A. Closes Unit Focused on Capture of bin Laden.” The NYT article explained “The Central Intelligence Agency has closed a unit that for a decade had the mission of hunting Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenants, intelligence officials confirmed Monday. The unit, known as Alec Station, was disbanded late last year and its analysts reassigned within the C.I.A. Counterterrorist Center, the officials said….Michael Scheuer, a former senior C.I.A. official who was the first head of the unit, said the move reflected a view within the agency that Mr. bin Laden was no longer the threat he once was.” Read the article
  67. On June 5, 2006, the Muckraker Report contacted the FBI Headquarters, (202) 324-3000, to learn why Bin Laden’s Most Wanted poster did not indicate that Usama was also wanted in connection with 9/11. The Muckraker Report spoke with Rex Tomb, Chief of Investigative Publicity for the FBI. When asked why there is no mention of 9/11 on Bin Laden’s Most Wanted web page, Tomb said, “The reason why 9/11 is not mentioned on Usama Bin Laden’s Most Wanted page is because the FBI has no hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11.” The Muckraker Report reflected “the Bush Administration told the American people that Usama Bin Laden was Public Enemy Number One and responsible for the deaths of nearly 3000 people on September 11, 2001. Yet nearly five years later, the FBI says that it has no hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11.” Read the article
  68. On May 2, 2011, it was reported US Navy SEALs broke into a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. They killed Osama bin Laden and buried his body in the North Arabian Sea. See “Osama bin Laden is Dead,” CBS, May 2, 2011. On September 9, 2012, 60 Minutes ran a special titled “Killing Bin Laden.” Host Scott Pelley interviewed SEAL Team 6 member Mark Owen (his pseudonym) who said the subject he shot did not look like bin Laden. Asked “Did you recognize him?” Owen replied, “No. You know, everybody thinks it’s like, you know it’s him. No. To us, at that time, it could have been anybody. Maybe this is another brother. Maybe this is a bodyguard. It doesn’t matter.” Owen (a pseudonym) tells CNN’s Scott Pelley that earlier, the person he shot was wounded. If this person purported to be Bin laden was wounded, but alive, would it not be valuable to have the alleged prime suspect behind the attacks of Sept. 11 apprehended and put on trial? 69. On May 5, 2011, the Boston Globe ran a news story with the headline “Faked bin Laden Photo Dupes Brown: Hoax Pictures Also Fooled Other Senators.” Republican Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown said in an official briefing regarding bin Laden’s reported killing, he’d been shown photos of bin Laden that were “doctored images.” New Hampshire Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte said she was shown fake photos that had been photoshopped from scenes in the film Blackhawk Down. They were flipped around and enhanced with bin Laden facial images. It was not known why these photos were shown at official intelligence briefings to members of the United States Senate Committee on Armed Services. Read the article As well a Guardian headline on May 2, 2011 exclaimed “Osama bin Laden Corpse Photo is Fake.” Read the article It is worth noting that in 2007, Senate Intelligence Chairman Jay Rockefeller told reporter Charles Davis, “Don’t you understand the way Intelligence works? Do you think that because I’m Chairman of the Intelligence Committee that I just say I want it, and they give it to me? They control it. All of it. All of it. All the time. I only get it, and my committee only gets it, what they want to give me.” By implication, the “doctored images” of bin Laden, provided to Senators Scott Brown and Kelly Ayotte at an official Intelligence briefing for the Senate Committee on Armed Services, would have the CIA as its source, or Pentagon Intelligence. The reference to the Davis-Rockefeller question-and-answer is discussed on page 459 of A Lie Too Big To Fail: The Real History of the Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy by Lisa Pease.

It also said it could not find any images of bin Laden’s body on the Vinson …. In the prologue to his book Raids on the Unspeakable, Thomas Merton wrote about what he called “The Unspeakable.” He described it as “the void that we encounter, you and I, underlying the announced programs, the good intentions, the unexampled and universal aspirations for the best of all possible worlds. It is the void that contradicts everything that is spoken even before the words are said; the void that gets into the language of public and official declarations at the very moment when they are pronounced, and makes them ring dead with the hollowness of the abyss…. It is the emptiness of “the end.” Not necessarily the end of the world, but a theological point of no return, a climax of absolute finality in refusal, inquivocation, in disorder, in absurdity, which can be broken open again to truth only by miracle, by the coming of God…. one of the awful facts of our age is the evidence that it is stricken indeed, stricken to the very core of its being by the presence of the Unspeakable. Those who are at present so eager to be reconciled with the world at any price must take care not to be reconciled with it under this particular aspect: as the nest of the Unspeakable. This is what too few are willing to see.” In the two decades since the attacks of Sept. 11, a compelling argument can be made that the events of that day involve what Merton meant by the Unspeakable. 73. In a book by French philosopher René Girard, titled The One By Whom Scandal Comes, he writes about the human problem of finding scapegoats in response to acts of violence. Girard writes “there is also a tendency, universal among human beings, to take out their anger on a substitute, on an alternative victim…. Everywhere and always, when human beings either cannot or dare not take their anger out on the thing that has caused it, they unconsciously search for substitutes, and more often than not they find them.” There are many in the 911Truth movement who contend there is a compelling case for understanding the attacks of Sept. 11, as what Girard would regard as scapegoating. While it is important to identify the perpetrators of such an atrocity as the attacks of Sept. 11, President George W. Bush, and others, accused Osama bin Laden of being the “prime suspect,” as well as Saddam Hussein and Iraq, and even Iran. And so, there is a case that Kevin Ryan, David Ray Griffin and other authors have made that make a compelling case for complicity on the part of some actors within the American government for either orchestrating or enabling the attacks. According to the 9/11 Commission, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld urged President Bush to “think broadly about who might have harbored the attackers, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Sudan, and Iran He wonder[s] aloud how much evidence the United States would need in order to deal with these countries, pointing out that major strikes could take up to 60 days to assemble.” Read page 330 of the 9/11 Commission Report
  75. General Wesley Clark learned by September 20, 2001, that there was a decision in the Bush administration and at the Pentagon to go to war against Iraq. A senior general told him “We’ve made the decision we’re going to war with Iraq.” In November 2001, Clark spoke again with the general at the Pentagon to ask if plans to go to war against Iraq were still on the table. He was told “Yes, sir, but it’s worse than that.” He holds up a piece of paper and says: “I just got this memo… from the office of the secretary of defense upstairs. It’s a, it’s a five-year plan. We’re going to take down seven countries in five years. We’re going to start with Iraq, then Syria, Lebanon, then Libya, Somalia, Sudan, we’re going to come back and get Iran in five years.” The general informs Clark that the paper is classified. At that moment, Clark replies, “Well, don’t show it to me, because I want to be able to talk about it.” The comments were reported by Clark in an interview with Amy Goodman on her Democracy Now! At the first cabinet meeting of the new Bush administration, O’Neill observed that the debate was not “should we attack Iraq?” but rather “how do we go about attacking Iraq?” Read the book
